Who do you have a covenant with? A covenant is an agreement. It usually involves two or more people. It is a binding agreement. It is a contract. When a man and a woman get married, their marriage license is a legal, binding covenant. When someone does business with someone and signs a contract, that is a legal, binding covenant. This contract, covenant gives each person involved power. There is trust between the individuals involved. Everyone has responsibilities within this covenant. There are also perks. There are many types of covenants. But the one I am going to speak about is even more significant than the ones previously mentioned. I am speaking of the covenant we have with our Heavenly Father.
Biblically, a covenant in the Bible is one in which God has a covenant with His people. The very first covenant can be found in the Book of Genesis. It was called the Adamic Covenant. This was a covenant between God and Adam and Eve. God created man in His likeness. In His image. He breathed life into him. He had His spirit inside him. God gave him dominion and power. Adam and Eve broke that covenant when they disobeyed God. They were free to do just about anything except eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. And because they disobeyed God, the covenant was broken. God continued to provide for them, but they were cast out of the Garden of Eden. And because of their actions, sin and death were now a part of their lives. Adam and Eve broke the covenant with God by listening to the enemy. They listened to the snake. They let the snake warp their thinking and trick them into disobeying God. Think for a moment, who are you listening to? Who are you risking breaking your covenant with God with?
The other covenant I want to mention is the new covenant that replaced the old covenant. The new covenant is the covenant that came to pass with the death of Jesus Christ on the cross. This covenant offers the forgiveness of sins and a relationship with Christ through the Holy Spirit. This is an awesome covenant. We have someone to fight our battles. We have someone to step in on our behalf. We have someone to comfort us, support us, love us, and be there for us. Someone who will never leave us nor forsake us. What an awesome covenant to have. And even though we have this great covenant, there are still some of us wanting to do our own thing. Some of us still want to keep on having fun doing things we should not be doing. Some of us want to keep hanging out with the wrong crowd. Some of us are putting off making God the head of our lives. We want to wait. We say we are not ready. We feel we are going to give up something. We do not want to make that covenant with God because we feel like we cannot be ourselves. Do you know that Christians have fun too? Do you know that Christians hang out with their friends? Do you know Christians laugh and joke? Yes, they do. With this covenant, we must be faithful and live Christ-like. As with any covenant, there are benefits. We have the love of our Heavenly Father. We have his protection. We are blessed beyond measure.
Do you know what the contract is that represents the covenant for us in a tangible sense? It is the Bible. It is legal and binding. You can open the Bible and find all of God’s promises to us. All we must do is hold Him to His Word. Here are a few.
John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.” The promise of salvation and eternal life.
Psalm 32:8 “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye on you”. The promise of guidance and teaching, that He is always watching and guiding.
Isaiah 26:3 You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You. Because He trusts in You.” The promise of peace.
Mark 11:25 “And when you stand praying, forgive if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father who is in heaven may also forgive you your sins”. The promise of forgiveness.
John 15:12-14 “12 This is My commandment: that you love one another, as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no man than this: that a man lay down his life for his friends. 14 You are My friends if you do whatever I command you”. The promise of companionship.
Philippians 4:19 “But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus”. God is your everything.
Isaiah 40:31 “But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint”. The promise of strength. And that is just a few of the promises. The Bible is full of them.
Those promises are the perks and benefits that I was talking about. God holds to His promises. Can you say the same for your friends you hang out with? Or those who are trying to coax you into going down the wrong path, just like the snake did Eve. Our covenant with God is much more precious than silver or gold. Our covenant with God will hold up anywhere. It is binding. Unfortunately, we are the ones who break that covenant. God does not. We are the ones who cannot hold up our end of the contract. We stop going to church and studying His Word. We stop trusting and believing in Him. We stop giving Him praise and adoration. We stop making Him head of our lives. We stop making Him a part of our lives. That is until we need Him. But you know what God does not tear up the contract. He does not say it is now null and void. He says I forgive you. All is forgiven, and your slate is wiped clean. Your contract starts up again, anew. Written with the same benefits and perks as before. All is forgotten. Can you say that about the covenant you make with the enemy? No, you cannot. They will not wipe the slate clean. They will keep reminding you of when you messed up and all the things you did wrong. They will continue to tear you down and lead you down the wrong path. Not our Heavenly Father. He loves us unconditionally, and he forgives and forgets.
I will ask you again, with whom do you have a covenant? And if that covenant is not with God, then is the one you have truly worth it. Are you getting all the benefits and perks that your Heavenly Father would give you? Are you getting all the promises that are listed in the Bible? Does this covenant include someone being with you through thick and thin, no matter what? Does your covenant include a true friend? Does your covenant include a clause on forgiveness when you mess up? Does your covenant include a clause of unconditional love, even when you do not know how to love yourself? Does your covenant include a clause on compassion? Does your covenant include all those things and more? If it doesn’t, then you need to tear up that covenant and make a covenant with God. It is time to move to the next level and allow God to be head of your life. Allow God to direct your path. Allow God to be your everything and more. It is time to have a covenant with the Heavenly Father. It is the best covenant you could ever have.
