The Benefits and Value of Spices: Enhancing Flavor and Health

William Cowper was a great 18th century poet who wrote “The Task, A Poem, in Six Books.” In Book II, we can find his words “variety is the very spice of life, that gives it all its flavor.” This phrase is often referenced to express how interesting life can be when different opportunities and experiences are explored.

And oh how flavorful spices can be! Spices are essential flavor enhancers that are masterfully used by great chefs in restaurants at all levels, as secret ingredients in cherished family recipes handed down through generations, and in our own homes as we prepare meals for ourselves and our families.

Exploring biblical times, we find that spices had many uses, including religious offerings, anointing oil, burial rituals, medicines, strong fragrance, and trade. Spices were so valuable that they were considered symbols of wealth.

  • And she gave the king an hundred and twenty talents of gold, and of spices great abundance, and precious stones: neither was there any such spice as the queen of Sheba gave king Solomon. (2 Chron. 9:9 KJV)
  • And Hezekiah had exceeding much riches and honour: and he made himself treasuries for silver, and for gold, and for precious stones, and for spices, and for shields, and for all manner of pleasant jewels; (2 Chron 32:27 KJV)

Spices were valued as highly as gold and precious stones. Their value was not just as flavor enhancers, but also for medicinal properties.
