Tell us about your evolution from 16 years in education to current-day efforts.
My journey was designed to bring me here – each educational step had a purpose. Leaving Mississippi 10 years ago was terrifying, but a mindset shift ignited my evolution. Realizing I deserved more, I networked, found my passion in computer science and STEM, and began sharing my knowledge at conferences. My transformation continues.
How has your faith impacted the journey during various professional transitions?
My faith has been my unwavering anchor, especially during the turbulence of professional transitions. Life inevitably brings trials and tribulations, but it’s my faith that fuels hope in my dreams and gives me the determination to persevere. In moments of doubt or difficulty, my faith reminds me of my potential and pushes me to keep striving. Without it, I don’t believe I would have had the courage to take the risks or overcome the obstacles that have ultimately led me to where I am today.
What are some of the challenges that educators may be currently facing?
Educators face a substantial number of challenges, some more pronounced now than when I was in the classroom, but many have always existed. Low pay and excessive workload are two of the most significant issues. I’m a strong advocate for paying teachers more and honoring their expertise. We don’t see enough free professional development opportunities offered to educators, specifically on how to elevate their careers. I don’t believe educators need to leave the classroom, but they do need to expand their career goals – whether that means becoming a lead teacher, sharing knowledge at conferences, or transitioning into leadership roles. My own consulting journey began when I realized the need to spread awareness about the lack of diversity in STEM and CS fields for girls. It wasn’t easy, as I lacked mentors and didn’t understand the dynamics of networking or submitting proposals.
How is your new book the solution to some of these issues?
My new guide is a catalyst for educators ready to ignite the change they want to see in their careers. It’s a starting point for the journey of elevation – a journey that involves shifting your perspective to a higher altitude. Elevation can manifest in many ways: enhancing your day-to-day teaching, stepping into leadership roles, or sharing your knowledge on a wider scale. While my book doesn’t offer a direct solution to the heartbreaking issue of educator pay, it empowers you to take control of your professional trajectory. It guides you in identifying your unique expertise, the value you bring, and how to leverage those strengths for growth. This is a starting point for elevation, but the work itself – that’s where you come in, and I’m here to support you every step of the way. Like many educators, I’ve felt lost and undervalued, unsure of my path. I craved someone to tell me that my skills and passions held worth. Now, I’m that voice for others. My guide is a testament to the belief that every educator matters, and with a simple yet powerful mindset shift, you can unlock your potential and elevate your career on your own terms.
