How to Leverage Essence Festival for Your Business

For the last 20+ years, Essence Festival has attracted over 100,000 visitors each summer for a multifaceted weekend. The weekend typically includes specific activations for authors, business owners, wellness enthusiasts, filmmakers, community advocates, and more. I’m excited to return to New Orleans this summer and host the ‘Glambitious Brunch Experience’ for Women in Business that weekend.  This would be the 4th event I have produced in the New Orleans market to coincide with the other festival weekend activities. Preparing for this sparked an idea to share an article on 4 ways to leverage Essence Festival for your business.  If you do not yet have plans to attend, there are still accommodations available in the city and opportunities to meet dynamic business connections that weekend!

  1. Distribute marketing assets.  Although most entrepreneurs focus most of their marketing energy on social media, there is still great value in distributing physical marketing assets. These marketing assets could be simple flyers, brochures, fans with your branding, or other creative yet cost-effective products. This has worked very well for my business at live events and festivals of all sizes. Use bright colors, bold fonts, and a clear call-to-action that compels people to visit your website or Instagram page.
  2. Seek collaboration opportunities.  Most festivals allow vending or have other creative ways to align your business, however these typically come at a premium investment. If participating directly with the festival is outside your current marketing budget, visit Eventbrite.com to find other events happening during the festival dates. For example with the Glambitious New Orleans brunch, I offer speaking and panelist opportunities for women in business to showcase their expertise.
  3. Host a pop-up experience.  Major events like Essence Festival attract a large crowd, providing a great opportunity to host a pop-up event in the city. Attendees are often seeking other experiences while visiting, and your event may be exactly what they are looking for. You can also connect with the local Publicists to invite their clients as VIP guests, offer vending opportunities for local businesses, and invite your community. If this idea feels overwhelming, perhaps partner with a colleague so that you can split the expenses and workload.
  4. Network as much as possible.  Be intentional about speaking with as many people as possible during your festival or event attendance. Master your 30-second elevator pitch, so that you can clearly articulate who you are and the nature of your business without sounding like a salesman. Create a digital business card using a platform like “Hi Hello” and print physical business cards as well. The next business day after the festival, follow up with everyone and invite them to a brief reconnection call via Zoom. Zoom reconnection calls are the 2024 way of inviting someone for coffee, without the inconvenience.

Leveraging the Essence Festival for your business can open up numerous opportunities for growth, networking, and brand exposure. By distributing physical marketing assets, seeking collaboration opportunities, hosting pop-up experiences, and maximizing your networking efforts, you can make a significant impact during the festival weekend. Whether you are attending for the first time or are a seasoned participant, these strategies can help you connect with dynamic business connections and elevate your brand presence. Don’t miss out on the chance to make the most of this vibrant, multifaceted event. Start planning now to ensure your business stands out at the Essence Festival and beyond.
